If you've been looking for a cheap and easy way to dig into retro gaming, the DSiWare version of Donkey Kong Jr. could be it. It's difficult and caters to crowds who value high scores above all else, but what would you expect from a Handheld Game from the early 1980s? It's simple but easy to pick and play, is presented well, and features early Game & Watch incarnations of Mario and Donkey Kong, all of which should sound pretty good to any Nintendo fan.
Assuming you didn't play the handheld Game & Watch title back in the day, there's still fun to be had here. The basic gameplay requires you to guide Donkey Kong Jr. across two platforms displayed on a static screen. Once he climbs from the bottom platform to the top he can jump, grab a swinging key, and gradually unlock a cage that holds a particularly depressed looking Donkey Kong while the dastardly Mario watches from the sidelines. The catch is that birds and alligators will try to assault you on Your Way up to the cage, and being able to properly time jumps to get out of the way and dart forward where there's an opening is crucial to success.
The presentation here is very true to the original product, with a grey-green background on which can be seen all the outlines of where enemies and characters appear along with gloriously old-school clicking and beeping sound effects. Even though the visuals are limited, Donkey Kong Jr.'s expressions are still entertaining to behold as he teeters across logs and looks frantically from side to side as he advances. Scoreboards to track how well you do have been implemented across the game's A and B modes, where A is for beginners and B is speedier and more challenging.
Scoring points is accomplished by jumping over gators and unlocking Donkey Kong's cage. There's also a bit of fruit located on the top platform that can be touched and dropped onto enemies below, potentially racking up big points if you can tag more than one at a time. Once you're done jumping over gators, keeping out of the birds' way, and clinging to vines, you'll need to properly time Donkey Kong Jr.'s jump at the swinging cage key to grab it and plunge it into the lock.
There are ways to earn bonus points and being fast about unlocking the cage has its rewards, so there's a little more depth to the experience beyond your twitch reflexes. The game gives you the option to also start out at increments of 100 points once you've achieved that score by starting at zero, but the total you get isn't recorded on the local leaderboards. An in-game tutorial teaches you the rules of the game and you can also choose to have it display the time of day (based on your DS system clock) while a demo of the game plays in the background.
